Sibal for law to deter ‘fix’ in all sports
The government on Sunday decided to tighten the leash on players, match-fixers and others indulging in illegal activities in sports: law minister Kapil Sibal spoke to minister of state for sports Jitendra Singh and suggested the sports ministry draft a law dealing with “fixing” and similar illegal activities.
“Yes, I talked to sports minister Jitendra Singh and discussed the need (for) a new law to deal with betting,” Mr Sibal said. He said people’s confidence in sports got shattered when such controversies erupted. The new law is likely to be a comprehensive one dealing with all sporting activities, including cricket.
Besides defining “spot-fixing”, it is also likely to deal with sports administrators and any “outsider” or “fixer” who tries to influence the outcome of a game or match. India currently has no such law.
