Sikhs protest intimidation
A large number of people on Saturday staged demonstrations in Sikh dominated Hatmura village of neighbouring Anantnag district demanding identification and punishment for the Army personnel involved in “intimidation of the Sikhs in the area” on Friday. The Sikh residents allege that soldiers from Army’s 3 Rashtriya Rifles arrived at Hatmulla and then started knocking the doors of their houses asking them to come out but when none acknowledged they hurled choicest abuses.

Gangotri shut for winter
Dehradun, Nov. 6: The famous Himalayan shrine of Gangotri temporarily closed for five months on Saturday on the occasion of “Annakut Parv”, the day after Diwali.
Thousands of pilgrims braved chilly winds for last darshan of the “Akhand Jyoti” as the chief priest of the Gangotri temple performed a special puja and locked its portals at 1 pm, said Sanjiv Semwal, chairman of Gangotri temple committee. Gangotri temple is situated at a height of above 10,000 feet in Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. —PTI

Vehicle turns turtle, 2 die

Nov. 6: At least, two persons were killed and three others wounded when a load-carrier auto rickshaw turned turtle when a group of rock-hurling youth attacked it at Nagabal outside Jammu and Kashmir’s southern town of Shopian on Saturday.
The incident occurred on the first day of a 3-day “civil curfew” strike called by influential separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani to commomerate the massacre of tens of thousands of Muslims in Jammu in the aftermath of the Partition.
