Simi plans to target Rushdie
The intelligence agencies warned the government Wednesday of a possible threat to writer Salman Rushdie from the banned Students’ Islamic Movement of India. The Simi leadership has asked its cadre to “target Rushdie” at this weekend’s Jaipur Literature Festival. It is speculated Rushdie might arrive in India Thursday.
The home ministry told the Delhi and Rajasthan governments to foil any bid to disrupt “communal harmony” or attacks during Rushdie’s visit.
A Muslim outfit is learnt to have offered a `1 lakh reward to anyone who hurls a slipper at Rushdie. The option of putting restrictions on Rushdie’s movements is being examined.
