Single test for medical quashed
In a much-awaited verdict that will affect the future of lakhs of medical students, the Supreme Court on Thursday held as invalid the common entrance test called NEET, held by the Medical Council of India for admission to MBBS, BDS and post-graduate courses in all medical colleges across the country.
Holding that the MCI is not empowered to conduct the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, the SC has given the go-ahead to private & government medical colleges to hold their own entrance examinations. The court also held that the common entrance test for admission in medical colleges “violates the rights of state and private institutions” and is likely to have a fallout as such tests are conducted for other professional courses, like engineering and management.
