Sleuths may quiz Raja, Radia on 2G allotment

New Delhi, Nov. 17: The CBI may question the former telecom minister, Mr A. Raja, and some of the senior officials of the ministry in connection with its probe into 2G spectrum case.

According to sources, the agency is planning to question the former union minister and some officials on the basis of certain leads, which emerged after the scrutiny of the documents that had been recovered during raids conducted in the offices of telecom ministry in October last year.

The raids were also conducted at the Wireless Planning Cell (WPC) and the office of Deputy Director General (Access Services), Sanchar Bhavan.

“Incriminating documents had been recovered following the raids conducted at 19 places, including 10 telecom companies, across the country. The cities where raids were conducted included — Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Mumbai, Jaipur, Mohali, Chennai and Ahmedabad”, sources said.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate is proceeding to summon Mr Raja’s associate, Mr Nira Radia, over his role. He was served summons 10 days ago but had not responded yet.

A close scrutiny of the documents has revealed direct role of certain officials of the ministry in the 2G allotment, sources said, adding that it needs to be verified again. If required, the agency may question Mr Raja also, sources added.

The agency had already registered a case against unknown officials of the DoT and unknown private persons and companies and others under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 13 (i) (d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act (a public servant committing criminal misconduct by indulging in corrupt means).

“It has been alleged that there had been serious irregularities in the award of Unified Access Services Licences to private companies. As per information received, there was criminal conspiracy between certain officials of DoT and private persons and companies in order to award licences to these companies by putting a cap on the number of applicants against TRAI recommendations”, sources said.
