Smriti assaulted by Left workers
BJP Mahila Morcha chief and TV actor Smriti Irani and her party workers were assaulted and harassed by Leftist leader in northearn Assam’s Sonitpur district on Tuesday.
BJP organising secretary P. Chandra Sekhar told this newspaper that incident took place near Balipara near Tezpur when Ms Irani with Mahila Morcha vice president S
harda Devi and two male members from Tezpur were proceeding towards Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh. “They were stopped near Balipara and asked to go back by strike supporters. When they resisted some the Left party workers assaulted the male members and tried to drag out Sharda from the vehicle,” he said regretting that Assam police was informed about Ms Irani’s visit but security officials did not turn up on time and they were compelled to travel without proper security cover.
However, a police escort team accompanying Ms Irani remained a silent spectator to the incident.
Ms Irani who left for Itanagar said that the police escort accompanying her stood by while the whole incident took place. “It is shocking that the local police remained by standers. I am amazed that they also told us to listen to the attackers and go back,” she claimed. Ms Irani said that these members claimed to be from the DYSI who had given a strike call.
