SMS vehicle number to nab rash drivers

Hit by a speeding vehicle? No need to despair. Just make sure that you note down the vehicle number.

You can trace the owner of the vehicle in a few seconds just by sending an SMS to the transport department, indicating the vehicle number.

The state transport department is contemplating to introduce this novel scheme in coordination with the national informatics centre (NIC).

This move would certainly help to a great extent solve several accident cases, especially hit-and-run cases, thereby resulting in speedy disbursal of insurance to the aggrieved family.

“With all the RTO offices being networked, it is easy to access the details of the registered vehicles. However, there are a few problems in feeding details of old vehicles,” a senior official told Deccan Chronicle.

The scheme would be launched soon after sorting out a few issues, he said.
“The vehicle numbers are now fed into a central server with the help of NIC and updating is under way.”

This scheme would help accident victims, especially in hit-and-run cases, as details of the offender’s vehicles could be tracked by just sending an SMS.

“In most of the hit-and-run cases, the victims cannot claim compensation from insurance companies as the vehicle flees the scene without providing even first-aid to the victim. Even passersby could help victims of road accidents by accessing the details of the offender through this facility,” added the official.

“It will be useful for vehicle buyers as it can be used to check the genuineness of a vehicle as the reply message would display the type, chassis and engine numbers of the vehicles and address of the owner as well. The mobile number will be publicised during the launch of the scheme,” he added.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
