Sonia asked to pick PCC chiefs
The much-talked about democracy in the Pradesh Congress seems to have come to an end, after the election for the post of president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) turned into a selection process on Monday. The MPCC has sent a one-line proposal to the AICC president Mrs Sonia Gandhi, asking her to nominate the heads of both the Congress committees.
A meeting at the MPCC’s office at Tilak Bhavan that lasted for several hours and was attended by many prominent Congress leaders of the state could not come up with any unanimous decision over the choice of MPCC and MRCC presidents. The regional election officer appointed for the state, Mr G.S. Charak, announced in the evening that no nominations had been filed, and said that it was decided in the meeting that a proposal would be forwarded to the party president.
Party workers had been anticipating an election.
Party workers also said that though Mr Thakre had once been very close to Union heavy industries minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, the relationship between the two had soured recently. So, Mr Thakre faced opposition from both Mr Deshmukh as well as state revenue minister Narayan Rane.
The Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee delegates on Monday also passed a one-line resolution authorising Mrs Gandhi to appoint the state party chief and announce the new MPCC executive.
