Sonia attacks Maya over UP corruption
Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday mounted a scathing attack on the Mayawati government when she said that corruption in Uttar Pradesh was from “top to bottom”.
“There are problems of bijli-paani-sadak (electricity, water and roads). The law and order situation is bad and corruption is from top to bottom. The youth here must get ready to fight against these because corruption stalls development,” she said while addressing a rally in Allahabad on Thursday.
This is the first time that the Congress president has launched a frontal attack on the UP government without even naming the BSP or Ms Mayawati. Mrs Gandhi’s posture indicates that the Congress is now gearing up to adopt a more aggressive posture against the state government.
She pointed out that Uttar Pradesh has been given money running into “hundreds of thousands of crores” because the Congress wants the state to match up to the progress level in other states.
She called upon the youth to take responsibility and ensure that people at the lowest levels become aware of the various developmental and welfare schemes and their rights. “The benefits must reach the target,” she said.
Mrs Gandhi also attacked the non-Congress parties when she said that her party did not have any double standards on the issue of corruption.
“Whenever there has been a complaint, we have acted. We will never tolerate corruption at any level. Dr Manmohan Singh has given a mature and honest leadership and has taken steps to make the UPA government free of corruption,” she said.
