Sonia clears 140 names for Bihar in CEC meet
Bihar is heading for multi-cornered contests in the coming electoral battle. While the Congress is the only national party fighting the all seats on its own, the real players in the state are chief minister Nitish Kumar and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.
The Central Election Committee of the Congress which met in New Delhi on Wednesday, is said to have cleared names of about 140 nominees. And its first list of about 70 candidates is likely to be released on Saturday.
In New Delhi, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi chaired the CEC meeting for the Bihar polls.
It was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other members. The party has decided to contest in the all the 243 seats. The Congress is likely to give more tickets to youths and thus try to make a dent in the JD(U)-BJP and the RJD-LJP fronts.
AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi will be the star campaigner of the party who would take on Mr Kumar, Mr Yadav, Mr Paswan.
Though, the JD(U)-BJP combine and the RJD-LJP will be fighting the battle under Mr Kumar and Mr Yadav respectively, the chief ministerial candidates for their parties, the Congress is unwilling to project a leader despite contesting all the Assembly seats.
The Sharad Pawar-led NCP would release its list of candidates by Saturday.
“We have decided to have our candidates in most of the 243 seats in Bihar and the list of our official candidates will be declared latest by September 25,” NCP general secretary Tariq Anwar said.
