Sonia discusses terror concerns from Pak
UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday called on visiting US President Barack Obama and discussed with him issues relating to mutual and global concerns.
The meeting, which lasted for more than half-an-hour, took place at ITC Maurya, where the US President is staying during his visit. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and chairman of party’s international affairs department Karan Singh accompanied Mrs Gandhi during the meeting. From the American side, besides Mr Obama, US ambassador to India Timothy Roemer was also present during the meeting. The Congress president had, however, have the opportunity to meet Mr Obama and his wife Michelle on Sunday when she attended the private dinner hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the honour of the visiting dignitary.
The accompanying Congress leaders helped the party president in her discussion with Mr Obama, which ranged from bilateral issues to global concerns. Party sources said, Mrs Gandhi shared with the visiting President India’s concerns relating to cross-border terrorism and how establishment in Pakistan has failed to curb the terror elements, which operate from across the border.
Mrs Gandhi, it was learnt, had also taken up issues relating to economic and strategic partnership betw-een the two countries. “The leaders expressed as to how the two countries could engage themselves with long-term perspective in areas of business, knowledge and strategic affairs,” party sources said. The Congress president is understood to have mentioned about a few of the UPA’s flagship programmes during her discussion with the US President. “She informed Mr Obama about how initiatives like Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Right to Information and Right to Education have made India’s growth story an inclusive one,” sources said.
