Sonia Gandhi on Friday created history on being re-elected Congress president for a record fourth term after remaining in the top post for 12 long years. She is the fifth member of the Gandhi-Nehru family to lead the party once again. She vowed to keep the party flag always flying high.

“Since the beginning the Congress has been working for every section of society. Whether we are in government or not, we should not forget this big responsibility,” she said and stressed that they should always be conscious of this role. She said the Congress has always come up to the expectations of all sections of society and all parts of the country.
PM Manmohan Singh and many other leaders, including Union ministers and AICC functionaries, were in attendance to greet the party chief. AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, however, could not make it due to prior engagements.
Earlier, Mr Fernandes declared Mrs Gandhi elected unopposed as the president of the Indian National Congress. Dr Manmohan Singh and AICC treasurer Motilal Vora presented her bouquets after the formal announcement of her election. Her election has the set the process of an organisational restructuring. The Congress Working Comm-ittee gets dissolved automatically after the Congress president’s election. Now, a steering committee will have to decide the dates and a venue for the party plenary.
