Sonia reaches out to Sushma on food bill
New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who has been under attack from Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, on Tuesday reached out to her in Parliament in a bid to win support for the passage of crucial bills.
Soon after the Lok Sabha was adjourned, Swaraj was walking towards Central Hall with BJP leader L.K. Advani and other MPs when Sonia Gandhi approached her and put one arm on the shoulder of the Leader of the Opposition. Sonia Gandhi walked with Sushma Swaraj for some distance.
MPs who witnessed this said the two leaders talked animatedly with each other. BJP leaders were, however, tight-lipped about the subject of the conversation.
Sonia Gandhi’s gesture appears to be an attempt at rapprochement with the main Opposition as the Congress wants the Food Security and Land Acquisition Bills passed in Parliament before the Budget Session ends on May 10.
The BJP supports these bills in principle and will give its nod if certain amendments are made. Sonia Gandhi’s move came as a surprise to many.
