SP says promotion bill is unconstitutional, backs OBC quota
Samajwadi Party has expressed strong opposition to cabinet that cleared an amendment bill to provide reservation for SC/ST employees in promotions at government jobs
The Samajwadi Party, which has been seeking similar measures for the OBCs also, has stated that the party would oppose the Constitution amendment bill.
Senior SP leader Mohan Singh said after the Union Cabinet gave its nod to the Constitution amendment bill that the move was 'unconstitutional'. The SP further stated that the government has hurried with the Constitution amendment bill to divert attention from the issue of the 'Coalgate' and the Opposition’s demand for a judicial probe.
However, Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan welcomed the decision of the Cabinet to introduce the bill in Parliament to provide for reservation in promotion for SCs/STs.
Mr Paswan claimed that he had made plea for immediate action on the subject to the government. Mr Paswan stated that "the reservation for the SC/ST was not a charity but was based on a decision taken at the Puna-pact at the time when Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar had threatened that he would demand ‘achuhisthan’ to overcome the historical and inhuman discrimination suffered by the Dalits”.
