Sparks fly at NCW khap meet
A meeting of the State Women Commissions on Monday witnessed a heated debate after a participant from Haryana stated that the “Khap Panchayats” have been doing good work.
The discussion reportedly went ugly after a Sushila Kumari, a representative from Haryana stated, “How come the khap panchayats, which are involved in good social causes, are now not appreciated anymore?”
The comment elicited reactions from the panelists and other speakers present at the discussion. Ms Kumari, later added that the society has also some responsibility.
However, no representatives from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh attended the meeting, a senior NCW official confirmed. The states of Rajasthan, UP, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh have seen alarming situations with the rise in female foeticide cases. An independent survey states that Rajasthan reported 14,494 incidents of crime against women in 2008, the corresponding figures for Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana were 23,569, 2627 and 5142. While, in 2009, Haryana registered 10 attempt to rape cases, 199 domestic violence cases, 269 dowry death cases and 593 rape cases. Meanwhile, the survey also states that Madhya Pradesh has seen 125 attempt to rape cases, 333 domestic violence cases, 136 rape cases and 102 dowry death cases.
