Special CBI court orders Jaya to appear before it on May 11
Dismissing discharge petitions by former chief minister Jayalalitha and two former cabinet colleagues, a special CBI court today directed them to appear before it on May 11 for framing of charges in the Rs two crore birthday gift case.
The CBI chargesheet, which has already been filed, names K.A. Sengottaiyan and Azhagu Thirunavukkarasu as co-accused.
It said Jayalalithaa had received the money in the form of 89 demand drafts drawn on banks from 59 people and about 15 lakh cash on her birthday in 1992 when she was chief minister.
The 2,000-page chargesheet has 285 supporting documents and lists 149 prosecution witnesses.
When the case came up for hearing today, the special CBI court judge Palanisamy directed the three to appear before it on May 11 after hearing submissions of all counsels.
The former AIADMK ministers have been charged under section 12 of Prevention of Corruption Act for abetting Jayalalithaa, while the AIADMK chief has been charged under Section 11 of the Act for allegedly accepting valuables from persons with whom she had official dealings.
