Speeding truck kills 13 in Etawah
A truck mowed down 13 people, including 11 women, in Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's hometown Etawah on Saturday.
Five others suffered critical injuries in the accident, which took place after the truck driver lost control of the vehicle and ran over the victims, who were sitting by the roadside.
Fuming locals blocked the traffic, demanding the chief minister to visit the accident site and refused to let the bodies be removed from the spot.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Etawah, Rajesh Modak, said that the same truck had caused another accident earlier, in which two people were injured.
"The accident occurred at between 8:45 and -9 in the night. The truck mowed down 13 people and four others were admitted to the hospital. The truck driver was sent to the hospital. The same truck caused another accident on its way before this accident in which two were injured," said Modak.
"Total 19 people have suffered, out of which 13 are killed," he added.
Police officials have been deployed at the site of the accident to avoid any untoward incident.
The truck driver and the helper have been detained .
