Splitting Ulfa may boomerang, says Mahanta
Former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said here on Friday said that peace talks excluding a faction of Ulfa led by Paresh Baruah would not be able to restore peace in the state.
Warning that such experiment of resolving the militancy by dividing the militant outfit may prove counter-productive, Mr Mahanta said, “The contradictory remarks of the Congress leaders have exposed them to the people.”
He said, “Congress party was telling the people in 2001 and 2006 elections that development was the only way to tackle militancy and restore peace but in 2011 the party is saying that peace was necessary for the development.”
Addressing a massive rally of more than 20,000 people at Samaguri on Thursday, Mr Mahanta also advocated talks with all the factions of outlawed NDFB instead of picking up a faction for talks.
Claiming to have sufficient number of seats to form the government, two-time chief minister and Leader of Opposition, Mr Mahanta said that the ruling party was resorting to all the illegal means to save its stalwarts from defeat.
Mr Mahanta, contesting in Bahrampur and Samuguri constituencies in the state’s second phase of polling, was also upbeat about returning to power.
Asserting that turnout of a large number of voters in his public rallies was the indicator of his victory in both the constituencies, Mr Mahanta also called upon people to come out in large number to exercise their franchise on Monday.
