Sreerag: Sreerag: Tangled in Net of deceit
The Bengaluru East Division police investigating the suspicious death of 25-year-old techie Sreerag S. claim to have cracked the case, attributing the cause to an internet romance gone wrong.
Police say a 23-year-old woman identified as Gayatri alias Jennifer alias Jenny Kutty conned Sreerag into falling in love with her over the internet. She has been arrested on charges of cheating and impersonation. She was staying with an uncle in K R Puram and working as a team leader with Ascon Sales and Service in Indiranagar. Her parents live in Jaipur.
Gayatri allegedly sent Sreerag a very beautiful picture which she said was of herself, when actually it was of her friend Sanjotha. She changed her name to Jennifer and claimed she was a rich, working, independent girl who some day wanted to be an international fashion designer and wanted to show her skills in Milan.
East Division DCP Mr Krishna Bhatta told the media on Friday that Gayatri was only an SSLC pass though she claimed she was an MBA graduate, working for IBM.
The police say details of the one-and-a-half-page emotional mail sent to her by Sreerag before he died have led the police to conclude it was a case of suicide though they are awaiting confirmation from the post-mortem report.
Sreerag's final email addressed to 'Jenny Kutty' shows that he really believed the character she had created. Referring to her plans of starting her own business, Sreerag wrote in the mail: 'I know whatever that you will do, you will succeed in it. In case you are planning to start of a business feel free for fashion related things. You are a pro in it and it is going to help you a lot. You might be showing your works in Milan some day.'
The police believe that Gayatri created the character of Jennifer with the intention of getting to know him, and once she realised that things were getting serious, she probably wanted to withdraw and hence sketched a plan to break up with him.
Accordingly, she introduced a new character, David, sent Sreerag a picture of a man she said was David who she was going to marry shortly. In his final email Sreerag begged her to forgive him because he had tried persuading her to marry him earlier.
Before concluding he advised her to take care of herself, and not trust anyone blindly 'Trust people who can be trusted. This world is hard and it's amazing how we survived in this. Well you have to watch out for everything and anything that will and can hurt you. I can no longer be physically standing near you to lend you my hand. But I will always be there for you,' wrote an emotional Sreerag.
The police are trying to trace the man in the photograph.
