Srinagar to lose 12 more bunkers

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced the removal of 12 more bunkers from the city as part of an exercise launched last year to reduce the footprints of the security forces in the Valley.

The chief minister made the announcement after chairing a high-level security meeting here.
With Thursday’s decision, the total number of security bunkers removed in the Valley stands at 39, with 27 of them removed earlier by the government in two phases. The decision to undertake removal of bunkers in other towns will be taken shortly, an official spokesperson said.
As part of its initiative to address the unrest in the Kashmir Valley, the Centre had decided to appoint a group of interlocutors to hold a “sustained dialogue” with various shades of opinion, to release about 200 youth detained for stone-pelting and de-escale the presence of security personnel. It had also requested the state government to review the deployment of security forces in the Kashmir Valley.
