Srisailam gets water for birthday

Hyderabad: The Srisailam dam, one of the major multipurpose projects on the river Krishna, will soon receive flood waters for the first time this season. The dam, which will be 50 years old on July 24, can see this as a birthday gift.
Due to heavy inflows into the Almatti dam in Karnataka, more than one lakh cusecs of Krishna waters has been released downstream. The same amount was simultaneously released from the Narayanapur dam for AP irrigation projects.
Jurala, the first major irrigation project in AP on the Krishna, received 90,000 cusecs of water on Sunday evening. Jurala authorities have consequently started operating five out of the six hydro power units (the sixth is undergoing repairs) and released 40,000 cusecs of water into the river which will reach Srisailam by Monday evening.
Meanwhile, the inflow position at the Sriramsagar project continues to be comfortable. It received 92,946 cusecs on Sunday morning and the present storage of the dam is 54 tmc ft against its full capacity of 90 tmc ft.
Flooding at the Dowle-swaram Cotton Barrage on the Godavari continues to be grim with the authorities releasing nearly 18 lakh cusecs of flood water into the sea. Since June 1, about 1,100 tmc ft of water has been discharged wastefully into the sea.
