Staple politics: UDF promises rice at `1 per kg
To beat the ruling Left Democratic Front in its own game, the opposition United Democratic Front on Friday promised to provide rice at `1 per kg for BPL families and `2 per kg for others.
In all, 25 kg rice would be provided a month to all ration card-holders, says the UDF poll manifesto released here.
In an attempt to woo the youth, the manifesto draws up the ambitious plan of creating 36.6 lakh jobs by attracting more investments and implementing various developmental initiatives in the next five years. At the same time, the UDF has vowed to annul the backdoor appointments made during the last five years by the LDF government.
Further, the Congress-led coalition has outlined a massive development initiative by implementing the Kochi Metro Rail Project, Sabarimala Master Plan, Vizhinham Port, Kannur airport, South–North high speed road corridor, rail corridor linking major airports and the inland water way.
The UDF also promises agricultural loans at 3 per cent interest and assures health insurance cover to all the families in the state. Further, financial aid of `2 lakh will be distributed to disabled farmers.
For easy implementation of infrastructure development plans, the state would be divided to three zones —IT zone at Thiruvananthapuram, Electornics and IT zone in Kochi and Industrial zone at Palakkad. Apart from this, special IT investment regions will be started at Kozhikode, Ernakulam, and Thiruvanathapuram. Satellite towns will be developed for the rural development.
