It was undoubtedly the most coveted dinner invitation in the country. The Awadhi fare — jumbo prawn, sole, leg of lamb (an Obama favourite) — was as diverse as the music — Sare jahan se achchha, Vaishnav Jan Toh and even the 1960s hit Ae meri zohra jabeen, tujhe maloom nahin.
On the high table, besides the PM and his wife and the Obamas were Mrs Sonia Gandhi and Mr Rahul Gandhi, besides finance minister Pranab Mukherjee.
But the others did not feel left out. Each of the 50-odd guests got to shake hands with both Barack and Michelle Obama, who were also introduced to the PM’s daughters and sons-in-law.
Besides ministers and politicians, the list included corporate leaders Azim Premji, Ratan Tata, Anu Aga and Swati Piramal; Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Aamir Khan, A.R. Rahman and Shekhar Kapur from the entertainment world; green activist Sunita Narain and chess grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand.
