States yet to reply on caste census
With a week to go for the Monsoon session of Parliament to begin, the Centre’s move for a caste-based census hangs in uncertainty. The government is still awaiting the response of political parties on whether caste should be included in the ongoing census. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, who heads the GoM on the politically-
sensitive issue, had written letters to political parties seeking their views on the matter, official sources said. However, no political party has responded so far, they said.
Mr Mukherjee wrote a letter to all political parties after the gm, constituted to discuss the modalities of the exercise, failed to reach a conclusion in its July 1 meeting.
While some members of the GoM favoured inclusion of caste, others had opposed it contending that it could harm the social fabric of the country, the sources said.
The Centre had constituted the GoM on the controversial issue after two meetings of the Union Cabinet failed to reach a consensus on the issue.
