Stir brewed for decades, T-factor was the trigger
The ongoing anger and unrest in hills of Karbi Anglong, which continue to burn even on Sunday, was not the fall out of a day or two. This is what the common view of the Karbi leaders in Karbi Anglong.
Veteran Karbi leader and former MLA Holiram Terang attributed “rampant corruption and non-governance” as the prime reason behind the anger of the hills people.
Pointing out that the Congress was ruling the council as well as the state for past 10 years, Mr Terang said, “In every election the Congress was assuring formation of an autonomous state but it remained an assurance. The Congress has been winning all the elections of council since 2002 in Karbi Anglong because of their repeated commitment to forming the autonomous state.”
Admitting that there is a history of agitation by hills people in Karbi Anglong and North Cachar, Mr Terong said, “It was never that elected representatives became the target of people’s anger.” Asserting that Telengana may have come as immediate provocation, Mr Terang said the anger was more because of complete non-governance.

SANTANU CHOWDHURY
KOLKATA, AUG. 4
As the agitation for separate statehood intensified on the second day of the indefinite strike called by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), Trinamul Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay on Sunday reiterated chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s stand that West Bengal would not be divided. He even threatened to stall Parliament if any political party supports GJM’s demand.
“The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration will continue to exist and the state of West Bengal will not be divided. If any political party tries to gain political mileage out of the present situation in hills, the Trinamul Congress will stall the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which begins on Monday,” Mr Bandyopadhyay said.
Six members of GJM were reportedly arrested for stopping the vehicle of superintendent of police Kunal Agarwal during the second day of indefinite bandh in Darjeeling hills.
While the arrested were taken to Darjeeling Sadar police station, a large number of GJM supporters and local leaders gheraoed the police station and demanded their immediate release, sources said.
