Student body sets Aug. 5 talks deadline

GUWAHATI

Assam CM Tarun Gogoi here on Wednesday made an appeal to All-Bodo Students’ Union to suspend their agitation while assuring to organise tripartite talks with New Delhi to resolve their demand for statehood.
The seven-member ABSU delegation, led by its vice-president Jeron Daimary, met the CM on Wednesday evening. Informing that the CM failed to give any specific assurance on holding the meeting, ABSU president Pramod Boro told this newspaper, “We have set a deadline of August 13 for the tripartite talks. If the government fails to hold any discussion, we will re-launch a vigorous movement to press for our demand.” Expressing his unhappiness over the response of the CM, Mr Boro said, “We have been deprived and laid down by this government in past also so this time we are not going to compromise on our core issues.” Pointing out that statehood demand of the Bodo people was compromised last time only because the government had assured to form a state re-organisation commission, Mr Boro said, “Instead of keeping the assurances, the government of India suddenly announced formation of Telengana. We have no problem in formation of smaller states but our demand should also be seen with the same spirit.”
