Students clash with police over 'Chalo Assembly' rally from OU
Hyderabad: Pro-Telangana students today pelted stones on policemen on the Osmania University campus here following which cops fired teargas shells on them. Protesting students pelted stones on policemen after being prevented from taking out a bike-rally in support of the 'Chalo Assembly' programme on June 14, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Zone) R Jaya Lakshmi said.
Earlier, pro-Telangana students affiliated to Telangana Vidyarthi Parishad, who sought to take out a rally from the OU claiming to meet ministers to get their nod for the proposed 'Chalo Assembly', raised slogans and argued with police over denial of permission.
Hyderabad Police has already said that no permission has been granted or will be given for the proposed Telangana Joint Action Committee sponsored 'Chalo Assembly' and warned of initiating stern action against those breaking the law. The TJAC has called for 'Chalo Assembly' programme due to delay in formation of Telangana state.
Meanwhile, a report from Warangal said that 40 pro-Telangana activists were today arrested there and 4,000 others across the district detained and then let-off in view of the June 14 'Chalo Assembly' agitation. According to police, restraining orders will be in place till June 14. Earlier, BJP, TRS, Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) and other pro-Telangana groups took out rallies.
A pro-Telangana leader, T Papi Reddy, condemned the arrests and demanded that the state government accord permission for the programme. Police have intensified checks and preventive arrests even as check posts are being set up on important roads leading to state capital.
City Police to impose Section 144 from Thursday
City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma on Wednesday ordered the imposition of Section 144 in the city limits from June 13 to 15th. “Reliable information has been placed before me that some unsocial elements under the guise of agitators are planning to cause harm to the person and public properties and trying to create disturbances affecting public peace and order in Hyderabad City,” the Commissioner said in his order.
Therefore, under Section 144, he prohibited every kind of procession, dharna, rally or public meetings and prohibited any individual/groups of individuals from making any speech, gesture or displaying pictures, symbols, placards, flags etc., which is likely to create animosity or hatred between different communities or individuals or is likely to cause disturbance to the public peace and order in the limits of Hyderabad City.
However, Friday prayers on June 14th have been exempted from this order.
Wine shops and bars to remain close for three-days from June 13
City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma on Wednesday ordered the closure of wine shops and bars attached to Restaurants in the city limits for three days from June 13. TRS has planned Chalo Assembly rally on June 14, for which permission has not been granted yet.
The Commissioner said that the wine shops and bars were being close in the interest of public peace and tranquility and in connection with agitational programmes given by some groups. Therefore, the wine shops and bars attached to restaurants will remain close from 6 PM on June 13th to June 15th. However, bars in Star Hotels and registered clubs have been exempted from the orders.
