Sudipta aide in judicial custody
Scamster Sudipta Sen’s aide Debjani Mukherjee was remanded in the judicial custody by the Bidhannagar court on Monday after the Bidhannagar city police did not seek her custody like Mr Sen. In the afternoon, she was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate. She was taken to the court straight from the private hospital in Salt Lake.
Debjani appeared to be ill during the hearing. The judge then asked her to sit on the bench. Debjani’s lawyers prayed for her bail. Rejecting the plea in the multiple cases, the court sent her to judicial remand till May 22, 23 and 31 but ordered the jail superintendent to arrange for her medical facilities if needed. The court also allowed the Baruipur police to produce Debjani in Baruipur court on Tuesday, in three cases like Mr Sen and Arvind Singh Chauhan, following a plea.
Debjani was taken to the Dum Dum Central Jail. But her court production from the private hospital opposite to the Bidhannagar police commissionerate created a controversy as to who would foot her medical bill of around `60,000 for her last two days’ treatment in a suite. The police admitted Debjani on Saturday morning to the hospital following her complaint of illness.
Citing security reasons, the cops argued that since Debjani is an accused in a high-profile case, she must be admitted to a private hospital instead of a government one. But her lawyers claimed that they were kept in dark about her admission.
Anirban Guha Thakurata, Debjani’s counsel, said, “Her family was not informed about her admission and was not asked to pay the bill. We learnt of her admission from the family.”
