The body of Ajmal, the aeronautical engineering student, who died on Friday in Bengaluru, was laid to rest at the Chovva Juma Masjid in Kannur on Friday night. Ajmal succumbed to serious burn injuries after battling for life in a hospital for the past few days.

The relatives of the deceased alleged that his injuries were the result of ragging by senior students of the college.

A first year student at the Sha-Shib College of Engineering, Chikballapur, Bengluru, Ajmal 19, son of Haris, native of Kappad near here, was hospitalized on March 22 with 67 per cent burns.

Haris, told DC that his son had earlier informed the family over the phone that three senior students of the institute had persecuted him in the guise of ragging.

The gang also demanded Rs 20,000 for New Year Celebrations to pay for which Ajmal took a gold chain worth 4.5 sovereigns without informing the family, Haris said.

Haris also said Ajmal, who was here one month ago to attend a marriage, returned to Bengaluru on Feb. 24.“He told us at the hospital that someone sprayed thinner, an inflammable solution used for painting, in the bathroom and he doesn't know who lit the flame,” Haris said. “My son will never commit suicide as some quarters are suggesting," he reiterated. “No student should suffer such treatment.”

The relatives have registered complaints with the chief minister, Kannur SP and Chakkarakallu police station it is learned.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
