Taliban threatens revenge, will attack ‘Indian targets’
The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pak-istan on Thursday threatened to attack “Indian targets” to avenge the hanging of Ajmal Kasab. “We have decided to target Indians to avenge the killing of Kasab”, said Taliban spokesman Ehsa-nullah Ehsan in a statement from an undisclosed location.
Kasab, the lone survivor of the terror squad that attacked Mumbai in November 2008, killing 166 people, was hanged to death in Pune on Wed-nesday. His body was buried within Pune’s Yerawada Jail. The Taliban spokesman said the Indian authorities must immediately return Kasab’s body and “if they don’t return his body to us or his family, we will capture Indians and will not return their bodies. We will hit them anywhere.”
Kasab’s hanging was the first execution carried out in India since 2004. There were celebrations on the streets of Mumbai and other Indian cities as the news spread, while militant groups in Pakistan reacted angrily, as did residents of his home village of Faridkot.
While Pakistan’s religious parties put pressure on the government to hang Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, the foreign office said Islamabad’s position on terror was clear and consistent, and it always condemned terrorism “in all its forms and manifestations”. Foreign Office spokesman Moazzam Ali Khan said Pakistan will cooperate and work closely with all nations in the region to eliminate terrorism.
Diplomatic sources said security at the Indian high commission here was further tightened after the Taliban threat.
