Tamil separatism worries Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: A section of hardline Tamil organisations have unleashed a campaign seeking Idukki district’s merger with Tamil Nadu even as home minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishan called for the examination of the contents of CD that propagated separatism.
The campaign being carried out through VCD, brands Kerala political leaders as “anti Tamil” and goes on to allege that atrocities faced by Tamil plantation workers were worse than during the British rule. It portrays Kerala as one state where Tamil plantation workers continue to be treated as “slaves”.
The police, however, are yet to come across the controversial CD though it has been in circulation for the last three months. The merger campaign is seen as an attempt by vested interests to incite the sizeable Tamil speaking population in the district.
Home minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said that issue had been settled during reorganisation of states in 1956.
“We will discourage any attempt to create a regional divide,’ ’ he added. According to sources, more than 30 per cent of the 12 lakh population in Idukki district is Tamil speaking people. They have sizable presence in Udambanchola and Devikulam taluks.
