Targeted by SP supporters, BSP men flee village
About 250 BSP supporters along with their families have fled their homes in Salarpur village in the newly created Bhim Nagar district since Thursday evening after being targeted by local Samajwadi Party workers.
Clashes between SP and BSP supporters had been taking place in a sporadic manner since the past two months but in the past two days, SP workers became increasingly aggressive and beat up several BSP supporters for not voting for the Samajwadi Party in the assembly elections.
“We have locked our homes and run away. We are hiding in the homes of our relatives to escape the wrath of the SP men because the police have turned into a silent spectator. I do not known if we will ever be able to return to our homes,” a BSP supporter said on telephone from Sambhal.
The local BSP leaders are on their way to Lucknow to meet the principal home secretary and apprise him of the prevailing situation in Salarpur.
State BSP president Swami Prasad Maurya, meanwhile, told reporters that the incident proves that ‘goonda raj’ was prevailing in Uttar Pradesh and the Samajwadi government lacked the political will needed to rein in criminal elements.
