Tata: PM must restore Centre’s credibility

Coming out in defence of the Prime Minister, who has been facing flak for the dismal performance of the economy, Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata on Thursday said that singling out Dr Manmohan Singh was grossly misdirected.

In an open letter on Twitter stating “apologies for the silence, depressed to see the attack on India, felt obliged to express my feelings”, Mr Tata lashed out at the Opposition, media and other critics for the current state of affairs.

He urged Dr Singh to break convention, restore government credibility and place the country on the growth path once again by implementing the promised reforms.

Noting that investor confidence has declined, he said that the Centre’s action has been “too little too late” but to single out and blame the PM was grossly misdirected.

The Tata group chairman highlighted the enormous damage done by political in-fighting, the single minded goal of the opposition to topple the government, the allegations, accusations of corruption and illegal acts, which have brought almost all government action to a standstill.

“We should be concerned about the unconfirmed sensationalised stories in the media to sell publications, the manipulation of policy by power brokers and powerful vested interest groups to meet their self-serving desire to continue protection. Finally we should be concerned about the policy changes, which have destroyed the credibility of India,” he said.

Terming Mr Singh as a person with great personal dignity and integrity, who was the architect of the ’91 reforms, which brought economic prosperity and international recognition to our country, the Tata Group chairman said that the Prime Minister deserves “the support of the people of India at this critical time to remove road-blocks to growth and control crony capitalism.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
