Taxman begins probe
The income-tax department has also started an investigation into the Commonwealth Games mess.
The primary concern of the taxman is to look and find cases of tax evasion during the Games. The department will look at tax deductions made at source by the organising committee. The department is collecting documents of various contacts awarded and payments made by several government agencies to private contractors during the Games. Public money reportedly amounting to `70,000 crores was spent on the Games.
“The I-T department will look into the payments made by government agencies to private contractors to see that there is no tax evasion. The department will be obtaining records of all contracts given to private agencies,” said a senior official from the finance ministry. He said the department will be looking at the real costs of development of the projects, and what was reported, to arrive at the real profits of the builders.

Oct. 17: Offering an olive branch to all the stakeholders, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Sunday said that the government will work together with the judges, the generals, political parties and the journalists.
“If we can work with the Army and the politicians and the media, then why can’t we work with the judges? We can sort out the differences in one way or the other,” Mr Gilani said.
