Taxman goes after Nitin Gadkari
After the ministry of corporate affairs, the income-tax department has also decided to probe the fund transfers by alleged 'shell' companies to BJP president Nitin Gadkari’s company Purti Power and Sugar Limited (PPSL).
On Thursday, officials from the I-T department said that they would trace the source of the funds of the companies that pumped money into Mr Gadkari’s company and a report of the same would be submitted to the Central Board of Direct Taxes.
Throwing light on the probe, a top official from the I-T department said officials from the investigation wings of the department in Mumbai and Pune were involved in the probe and would be summoning representatives of the investing companies for investigation.
“Mr Gadkari could also be called during the interrogation if there is a need for the same,” said the official. Pointing to “prima facie evidence” wherein dormant and inactive firms had been found to have transferred funds to PPSL, the official said the probe would revolve around collecting documents relating to these companies.
Another aspect that could be probed would be the investments forwarded by Ideal Road Builders (IRB) to Purti.
IRB had won contracts between 1995 and 1999, when Mr Gadkari was the PWD minister in Maharashtra.
