The physical education teacher of a private school in Coimbatore, who forcibly cut the hair of a class 5 girl student was awarded one-month imprisonment and fined Rs 500 by a judicial magistrate court here on Tuesday.
The teacher cut the girl's hair as the latter came to school letting her hair loose.
On March 3, 2008, Hariharasudha (10), studying at Bharathi matriculation HSS on Thadagam road, had gone to school without plaiting her hair. Physical training teacher Shobana, who noticed Hariharasudha, immediately snipped her hair.
The teacher also caned the child severely and made her kneel down.
Hariharasudha reported the matter to her parents when she reached home in the evening. Delivering the verdict, judicial magistrate Hemanth Kumar observed that the punishment should act as a deterrent for others.
