Teachers at AMU on strike

Aligarh Muslim University Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) has proceeded on an indefinite sit-in strike on the campus to protest against the institution’s indefinite closure following a clash between rival students groups last week.

The sit-in began late on Monday evening after the talks with vice-chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis failed. AMUTA president Abdul Qayyum told reporters in Aligarh on Tuesday that their agitation would continue till the time the vice-chancellor revoked the closure order and restored the session.
The Aligarh Muslim University Teachers’ Association president said the indefinite closure of the AMU would jeopardise the career of hundreds of students. “The situation was certainly not grave enough to demand a sine die closure. The administration should have taken action against the guilty students instead of punishing the entire student community. Loss of time means a lot to students who are on the verge of building up their careers,” the president said.
