Tehatta firing victim’s wife gets `2 lakhs

In a damage control exercise, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday handed over a cheque of `2 lakhs to the wife of Tehatta police firing victim and offered a job to their son. She further described the incident as an “undesirable” one. She was visiting the ground zero for the first time after the incident on November 14 in which one person was killed.
Speaking at a rally at a local school ground in Tehatta, Ms Banerjee said: “The government is unhappy with the incident. It was an ‘undesirable’ one. We promise to make amends and undertake all developmental works here if my party wins in the upcoming panchayat election.” Ms Banerjee further announced sops for the people of Nadia district in an attempt to woo the voters before the rural polls. Tehatta is a red bastion with all its three Assembly constituencies in the control of Left Front. And the police firing has further dented the chances of Trinamul Congress in this belt.
The chief minister made a clear attempt to pacify the people of Tehatta. She met the family of victim Ashok Sen and offered a job to his elder son. “It is an unfortunate incident. The state government condemns it. We do not want any such incidents to be repeated. We have already constituted a judicial inquiry to probe the incident,” she said. Ms Banerjee handed over the compensation cheque to Sen’s widow and gave an appointment letter of a homeguard to Sen’s elder son Amit. Two persons, who received injuries in police firing, would also be given government assistance, Ms Banerjee added.
Trouble had broken out in this border town after the police had refused to allow a Jagaddhatri Puja at a particular spot.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
