Telecom firms told to pay up
New Delhi, Nov. 19: Coming down on the new telecom companies which got spectrum cheaply in 2008, the government is now likely to ask them to shell more money. However, the government is unlikely to cancel licences of these telecom companies.
A section in the government believes that telecom sector is very important and should not be killed.
“It will not be a solution if suddenly tomorrow the government says that we cancel all the new licences. The government has lost revenue, so this much we can say to the companies that your licenses will remain intact but you will have to pay more money for it,” said sources.
The government will evaluate a value for the 2G spectrum and will ask these telecom firms to match this new price.
“There was a problem in the system. But what has happened has happened. We can’t say to the consumer that you will not get the service. We will look into what should be the value of the 2G spectrum and decide how to take in further,” added government sources.
