Tension on Assam land row grows
Tension has gripped the state with two powerful civil society groups — Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and All-Assam Students Union, launching a mass agitation against land swapping deal with Bangladesh and Lower Subansiri Mega dam project in Assam.
The RTI activist and core committee member of team Anna Akhil Gogoi here on Monday told this newspaper that they are going to organise a massive rally at Tezpur on Tuesday to register their strong protest against land swapping deal of the government with Bangladesh and attempt to take barges carrying turbines for the lower Subansiri mega dam project.
Besides, political parties like AGP and BJP, the students’ bodies, including Aasu, also took out cycle rally and protest marches opposing the twin issue rocking the state.
Meanwhile, authoritative sources in National Hydroelectric Power Corporation told this newspaper that they will be able to commission the first phase of the project on time. About movement of turbines blocked by protesters, sources said that they already have two turbines at the project sites, which would be enough to commission the first phase of the project.
On condition of anonym-ity, sources said that they need one more turbine to complete the project while rest of the turbines is being brought as standby. The anti-dam lobby, which has decided to join hands with all the struggling forces are chalking out agitation in phased manner to mount pressure on New Delhi to reverse its decision on land swapping deal with Bangladesh and construction of high-dam in the Northeast.
