Tension in Dehradun after India win
Tension erupted here soon after India’s win in the world cup cricket with frenzied crowd clashing with police that left over scores of people including policemen and media persons injured, police said.
As Indian Cricket captain M.S. Dhoni hit the winning six, thousands of people riding on bikes and cars rushed to the Clock Tower late last night to participate in the celebrations marking Team India’s second world cup win.
Police were immediately deployed as part of the security arrangements, however, somebody started throwing stones on policemen which resulted in clashes.
"We are trying to identify all those people who threw stones on police. It seems some outside people tried to create trouble in the city," SSP of Dehra Dun G S Martolia said. Areas like Chakrata Road, Clock Tower, Darshan Lal Chowk turned into battle grounds between the police and frenzied crowd and a motorbike was torched, he said.
Soon, police resorted to lathicharge in order to control the situation in which scores of people were injured, besides ten policemen and several media persons were also injured in the clashes, Martolia added. Nearly one dozen people were rounded up and left off in the morning, he said, adding, the situation is now normal in the city.
