Terror alert for Cup
The Centre has issued a nationwide terror alert following intelligence inputs warning that terrorist outfits like Al Qaeda and the Pakistan-based LeT are planning to target World Cup venues, coastal states, oil refineries and other offshore installations.
In a March 2 letter to the chief secretaries and DGPs of all states, the Intelligence Bureau warned that Al Qaeda was planning 26/11-style terror attacks, using its cells based in Saudi Arabia and the UAE to provide assistance to the attackers. “The attacks could be on power with the number of operatives who participated in the Mumbai attack,” it said.
Intelligence sources said some foreign intelligence agencies who have shared inputs with India had also alerted Pakistan last week, saying certain people there were planning terror hits in India. Union home secretary G.K. Pillai has spoken to the DGPs of a few states, including Maharashtra and Gujarat, asking them to tighten security at all vital installations. This alert comes ahead of talks between the home secretaries of India and Pakistan here March 28, and weeks before Assembly elections in several states.
