Third front will take time: Karat
The CPI(M), which was routed in its efforts to cobble up a third front during the last general elections, is at it again. Party general secretary Prakash Karat not merely tried to push forward his anti-Congress agenda, but also talked of a third alternative.
“The CPI(M) will seek the cooperation of those non-Congress secular parties who are willing to come together to take up peoples issues, defend secularism and oppose erosion of national sovereignty both within Parliament and outside. Wherever needed, there may be electoral understanding with such parties,” he stated.
While his anti-Congress stance is being believed to be the main reason for the CPI(M)’s downslide, Mr Karat insisted on “opposing the Congress the prime mover of neo-liberal policies of the UPA government, which represents the interests of the big bourgeoisie and favours a pro-US foreign policy.”
The Bengal unit of the party had indicated snapping ties with the UPA was a “historic blunder” for the CPI(M).
Sources disclosed that the draft political resolution and the review report being prepared for the extended central committee also flayed Mr Karat’s decision to snap ties with the United Progressive Alliance.
