Thrashed by cops, man kills self in lock-up

A young man consumed poison inside the police lock up in Madiaon police station in Lucknow on Friday night after he was severely beaten by the cops.

Suresh Rawat, 22, was rushed to the Trauma centre where he was declared brought dead. Suresh had reportedly consumed sulphas tablets after he was thrashed in the presence of his girlfriend.

According to police reports, Suresh Rawat, a laborer, had fallen in love with a girl while working at a construction site and had eloped with her two month ago.

The girl’s family lodged a complaint with the police that tried to pressurise Suresh’s family members in Sitapur district. Finally Suresh and the girl returned home and the couple claimed that they had got married.

On Friday, the couple was asked to report to the Madiaon police station and record their statements. When the couple reached the police station, the cops put Suresh in the lock up on the kidnapping complaint submitted by the girl’s family.
