Three TV cameramen assaulted by people holding Trinamool flags
Barrackpore (West Bengal): Three lensmen of local TV channels were attacked on Friday with iron rods and lathis by some people, holding Trinamool Congress flags, when they went to cover reported factional rivalry in the party at Barrackpore.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Subhankar Bhattacharjee said that one person was killed early on Friday at Sadar Bazar area here following which clashes erupted later between two groups reported to be supporters of TMC. They also ransacked the house of a local TMC leader. The three lensmen were beaten up when they went to the house of the leader.
The police did not confirm whether the killed person belonged to TMC.
Two of the lensmen who suffered injuries were admitted to the local B N Bose Hospital and CT Scan was conducted on one of them who had received head injuries. However,the condition of both of them was stated to be out of danger, police said.
The police arrested three persons in connection with the assault on the lensmen, the ADCP said.
Another three were arrested in connection with the killing early on Friday, he said. "The incident is highly condemnable and nobody should support it. Trinamool Congress is in no way connected with such attacks", state's commerce and industry minister Partha Chatterjee said.
"Be a common man or a journalist, we don't support any attack on them. The attackers will be arrested", Chatterjee, also the secretary-general of the party, said.
Stating that Trinamool Congress did not believe in armed politics, he said, "Those indulging in such violent activities will have to be identified and given exemplary punishment", he said.
Chatterjee said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly believes in the freedom of the press and disapproves of any violent attack on scribes. State's food minister Jyotipriya Mullick said that the police has been asked to arrest the attackers.
"I can assert with responsibility that Trinamool Congress was in no way involved in such attacks on scribes which is highly condemnable. No idea if CPI(M) or Congress was connected in the attacks," he said. He alleged that concerted attempts were being made to malignTrinamool Congress.
Leader of the Opposition Suryakanta Mishra condemned the attacks on TV reporters and demanded stern action against the culprits. He demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and alleged that it was an internal conflict of the TMC.
Congress leader and Union Minister Deepa Dasmunshi alleged that Trinamool Congress had been out to unleash terror prior to Panchayat polls in the state.
