Tipper lorry strike affects construction
Kochi: The indefinite strike by tipper lorries has brought the construction sector to a standstill in the district. Hundreds of construction sites, both government and private, in the district, have stopped work because of the non-availability of raw material. The tipper owners are not allowing other small vehicles to transport granite and sand from quarries.
“No goods were moving anywhere in the district, resulting in work coming to a standstill for many crucial projects. As the tipper lorry owners are blocking small vehicles from transporting construction materials from quarries to sites, even minor repair work on houses has been hit,” said K. R Bineesh, a corporation contractor.
The city corporation’s road construction and repair works under the Plan Fund have been badly hit following shortage of materials.
“Several road works have to be completed before the end of the fiscal year. We had
to send back the migrant labourers who were brought for the additional works to be completed before March,” added Bineesh.
