Tiruvarur upbeat over Karunanidhi’s candidature
With the decision of DMK president M. Karunanidhi to contest from Tiruvarur Assembly constituency, the mood of the party workers here is upbeat.
The jubilant DMK workers, led by party district secretary Poondi Kalaivanan, expressed their joy by distributing sweets to the public at the bus stand in Tiruvarur on Thursday. Later, they garlanded the statue of party founder Anna on Netaji road. Municipal chairman Thennan and other party functionaries participated in the event.
Mr Kalaivanan told Deccan Chronicle that not only the people of Tiruvarur constituency but also the people in the entire district were happy as Chief Minister Karunanidhi had decided to contest from the constituency. “Because the entire people of Tiruvarur district, regardless of their affiliations to political parties, consider him not the president of the DMK but a son of the soil,” Mr Kalaivanan said.
He said the mood of the party workers was now upbeat and the victory of the octogenarian leader with the highest margin in the state was now a foregone conclusion.
Asked about the opposition campaign against the DMK in connection with the 2G spectrum scam, Mr Kalaivanan said it would not have any impact in Tiruvarur and his party leader would romp home with the biggest margin in the state.
Mr Karunanidi is scheduled to address a public meeting at Tiruvarur on March 23 night to kickstart his campaign and file his nomination papers on March 24.
After the delimitation exercise, the educationally and economically most backward Tiruvarur has been de-reserved to become a general seat. Now, there are 2,03,733 voters in the constituency, including 1,01,988 women and 4 transgenders.
Mr Karunanidhi, who holds the record for winning all 11 Assembly elections he had contested since 1957, has, however, kept switching his constituencies over the years. He got elected to the Assembly from Anna Nagar, Saidapet, Harbour and Chepauk constituencies in the city, in the last few elections. However, he did not contest the 1980 Assembly elections when he was a member of the Legislative Council. After winning the 1991 Assembly elections from Harbour, he switched to Chepauk and was elected from the constituency in 1996, 2001 and 2006, recording a hat trick.
