TN asks Centre to halt N-plant, protest fast ends
Keeping its promise to protesters campaigning against the Koodankulam nuclear power project, the Tamil Nadu Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, adopted a resolution Thursday urging Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to halt the commissioning of the Koodankulam nuclear plant until people’s fears are allayed.
A day after she met the protesters here, Ms Jayalalithaa convened a Cabinet meeting to pass the resolution. After this, 127 villagers who were on an indefinite hungerstrike for the past 11 days at Idinthakarai called off their protest Thursday.
Ms Jayalalithaa will soon send a delegation comprising protesters and political representatives, led by state finance minister O. Panneerselvam, to New Delhi in this regard.
