TN bids adieu to board exams
Class X students belonging to Matriculation, Anglo-Indian and Oriental streams of education in Tamil Nadu, who wrote their last board examination on Monday, would remember this day forever as they were the last batch of students to take up board examination in these streams.
From the next academic year, the state government will implement uniform school education system from class I to X by which the four-decade-old Matriculation, Anglo-Indian and Oriental streams of education would become a thing of the past.
Mr N. Vijayan, principal of Zion matriculation higher secondary school and member of the uniform school education board, said even though the state will have common syllabus for all schools, the directorates for all boards, including Matriculation, will exist for administering them.
“From the ensuing academic year, matriculation and other board students will write board examination for 500 marks, instead of 1,100, thereby diluting the quality of education. We are planning to periodically assess students’ performance on the lines of continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) to make a difference in teaching between government and matric schools,” he said. Mr Vijayan pointed out that only top reputed matriculation schools would survive.
Mr P.B. Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary, state platform for common school system, refuted the matriculation schools’ complaint of dilution of standards. The system would bring down students’ burden as they need to study only five subjects, instead of 11.
