TN mass rape: 269 guilty
The verdict in the 1992 Vachathi mass rape case has been delivered today.
The Dharmapuri trial court in Tamil Nadu has found all the 269 accused guilty and has convicted them under various charges of rape, abuse and violation of human rights. The 215 include 54 who are now dead.
The tribals had then accused 100 policemen and nearly 155 officials of rape.
The Vachathi mass rape incident dates back to the days of sandalwood bandit Veerappan. Personnel belonging to a special task force searching for the brigand committed the atrocities on tribal women in the Sathyamangalam forest.
The case has been under the spotlight for a while and has also angered many human rights campaigners due the delay in verdict.
The court will shortly announced jail terms.
